AudioControl’s LC2i

lc2i_topThe LC2i, is a compact, two-channel processor with active input circuitry, which allows it to accept speaker-level signals of up to 400 watts per channel from factory-installed source units or amplifiers.  It converts them to high-quality pre-amp signals that can then be directed to after-market processors and/or amplifiers. Users can enjoy maximum sound quality while maintaining the use of factory volume and steering wheel controls.

How to Shop for a Remote Starter

So you’ve decided you’re done with getting into a cold car and done with scraping your windshield in the winter – you’ve made the right decision! Getting a remote car starter installed can save you from battling the cold weather every time you go to get in your car. (P.S. You can use one in the summer to crank the A/C too!) But maybe you’re not sure where to start shopping for one? We can help! Here’s a few tips and things to think about while you’re shopping for a remote start.

Where to Buy?

The most important thing about getting a remote start installed is finding a place that can do it. This is definitely not a DIY install so you’ll want someone professional and guaranteeexperienced. You’ll want to put your car in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing when it comes to installing this equipment. Not to brag, but we’ve been installing in the 12V industry for over 38 years and our experienced install technicians are fully trained and equipped to handle your vehicle properly. Plus, we offer a lifetime workmanship guarantee on all of our installations.

Consider Your Car

While many different remote start brands and models are available not all are compatible with every vehicle.  Your vehicle may require additional parts (like a bypass unit) or additional labor to make a remote start work properly. Features like factory security systems, push button starts, and standard transmissions are all factors in considering which remote start will work with your vehicle. We’re always happy to discuss any additional components that may or may not be needed to make a remote start work for your vehicle.

remote-starter-rangeRemote Start Range

Ask yourself where you’ll be starting your car from? It matters because different remote starts have different ranges. Will you be starting your car from inside your house right next to your driveway? Or maybe from your office while your car is parked in the back of the big office lot? You’ll want to make sure you purchase one that will work when you need it to. (Read more about Remote Start Range on our Blog Here.)

Consider Price

It’s true what they say, you get what you pay for. And what you should be paying for is high quality technology and knowledgeable installation. So it may not be best to go with the cheapest price you find. Maybe you’re shopping around online, that’s smart to research, but you might not be seeing an accurate price. Some retailers online don’t include the price of installation, or the price of any additional parts your specific vehicle may need. And some low cost models might not have the range you’ll need. When it comes to your car, don’t cut corners, invest in what you’re installing in it. We’ll be happy to walk you through our pricing structure and we’ll always be upfront about if your vehicle needs additional parts and additional costs. (We’ll be honest, most newer vehicles do require some extra attention, so don’t always assume the price you see online is 100% accurate.)

10670092_10152602803597982_7193951088121508003_nWhen to Shop

You’ve gotten this far, decided to get a remote start and maybe you’ve even picked out a model. The next step is to install it, but when? Simply put, do it now. Install it now before this winter hits, before you’ve scraped your first window for the year, and before the first snow flake falls. Be prepared, it’s that simple! It’ll benefit you to do it now not only because you’ll beat the weather, but you’ll also beat the rush of people who realize they need a remote start too when the weather turns. Once the frost starts coming every morning our install garage fills up quickly with remote start installations every day, so schedule your vehicle now.

Leather vs. Cloth Vehicle Interior

Pretty much everyone has an opinion on which is better; leather or cloth seats.  If you’re still deciding or thinking about upgrading your interior with Katzkin Leather installed by us, then let’s discuss a few pros and cons.

col-13-1-traverse-zoom-d-ts1383113389Leather Interior Pros:

  • Simply put, it’s luxurious, whether it’s your own opinion or just its reputation.
  • And the smell…admit it, there’s nothing like it.
  • Most top notch leathers are comfortable, soft, and supple.
  • Easy to clean accidental liquid spills or wipe up crumbs from too (those with children might understand all too well!)
  • Adds to a vehicle’s resale value

Leather Interior Cons:

  • Leather is significantly more expensive than cloth.
  • Too hot or too cold seats. (But hey, that’s what seat heat and cooling systems are for, right?)
  • While yes, it’s easy to clean, it also has to be maintained. If you don’t pay enough attention to your leather, over time it can harden, crack, and show wear.

Cloth Interior Pros:

  • vacuum-being-used-on-car-seatCloth is more affordable than leather. (Yes, we said leather is comfortable too – a pro for both!) No sticking to the seat, or sliding around like with leather.
  • The temperature of the seat won’t fluctuate with the weather. Cloth seats don’t swing from one temperature extreme to the other.
  • Low maintenance. Regular vehicle vacuuming can basically do the trick for regular up keep.

Cloth Interior Cons:

  • They stain more easily and can be difficult to clean. Depending on the circumstance, cloth seats could need to be steam cleaned.
  • The ‘new car’ smell doesn’t last. Cloth absorbs odor and can give your vehicle certain unpleasant scents if not careful.
  • Doesn’t really affect resale value compared to leather

Radar Detector FAQ

Investing in a radar detector can give you freedom while you drive; no more stressing about unwanted and unnecessary tickets.

These devices can detect the frequencies being emitted from radar guns and signal you while driving when there is radar technology in the area.  If used appropriately, they can be useful tools that can send reminders that people need to slow down, as well as encourage safer driving.

Types of Detectors:

  1. Corded Detectors: Windshield mounted via suction cups and are plugged into a 12V outlet
  2. Cordless Detectors: Can easily be moved from one vehicle to another and have a cleaner look than corded models, and run off of batteries
  3. Remote(Hidden) Mount Detectors: Permanently and typically custom installed into your vehicle, virtually undetectable and invisible

FAQ About Radar Detectors:

  1. Are they illegal?  No, not illegal.  They are legal for non-commercial vehicles in 49 states.
  2. What’s the major differences between portable and remote detectors?  Portable units mount on your windshield and are powered by a 12V outlet. Remote units feature a front and/or rear mounted receiver for exceptional performance, along with audio and visual warnings.
  3. Are radar jammers the same thing?  A radar jammer blocks the signals from a radar gun so that the police officer can’t get a reading on you.  A radar detector just signals you when radar is in use in your vicinity.  Jamming radar is a federal offense and prohibited nationwide.
  4. Don’t radar detectors just encourage speeding?  They’re not meant to promote unsafe driving. These devices are best used by safe drivers who find themselves going a little too fast sometimes. They’re to help detect law enforcement technology and remind you to pay attention to speed limits.
  5. If the weather is bad, will a detector actually work? Yes, this equipment isn’t affected by bad weather. Radar frequencies can travel through rain and snow.
  6. Does having a radar detector mean I’ll never get a ticket again? No, don’t stop being a cautious driver just because you have a detector. Technology advances every day and radar is not the only way police can catch a speeder. The only sure way to avoid getting a speeding ticket is to not speed.

A radar detector is definitely not a DIY installed product. Please save yourself from headaches and vehicle damage by having your detector installed by us.  We can help you choose the best one for your needs and answer any more questions about radar and laser protection you might have.

How to Choose a Radar Detector

alaska-highway-panorama_966x242The freedom to relax, drive with confidence, and not worry as much about an unwanted ticket – that’s what an investment in a radar detector can give you. But, what should you look for when you’ve decided to purchase one?

How Radar Detectors Work

speeding.ticket.6-640x424Police radar guns “see” a vehicle by transmitting a microwave pulse. Then they make use of the Doppler Effect: the frequency of the transmitted pulse is compared to the frequency of the reflection, and speed is calculated by using the difference between them. The idea behind radardetectors is they look for radar “beams” and find them before than can return a strong enough reflection to “illuminate” you. Radar detectors are essentially microwave radio receivers that make noise or flash lights when they sense an incoming signal on specific frequencies.

Important Features to Look for:

  • City Modes: This will reduce the range or sensitivity so that you get fewer false alerts.
  • Directional Awareness: Know exactly where the police are at all times. Dual radar receivers provide increased range to keep you protected.
  • 360 Laser Detection: A detector with one laser sensor can detect in front of you, but not behind you or off to the sides. 360-degree laser detection systems use two sensors to look for pulses all around you. A system with 360 functionality tend to be more reliable, but sometimes costlier too.
  • mm360heroVisual and/or Auditory Alerts: A voice or LED light alerts you that your radar detector has picked something up. With these alerts you don’t have to take your eyes off the road to look at the display.
  • GPS: Some GPS radar detectors can be programmed to “remember” areas that you drive past and alert you when they are approaching. If you drive past an area with a suddenly steep drop in the speed limit, the detector can warn you ahead of time so you can adjust your driving accordingly. Or you can program it to remind you of areas where there are red-light or speed cameras or frequent speed traps
  • Smartphone Compatibility: Integrate your radar detector with your smartphone using an Android or iOS App. These apps work to give you alerts provided by other app users, or highlight law enforcement areas others have encountered. There are also radar detectors that transmit alerts directly to your smartphone.
  • K-Band Sensitivity: If it’s been aimed at you, your speed has been measured by the time the detector alerts you. If it is being used to target vehicles ahead of you, a detector with a sensitive K-Band reception will alert you. High K-band sensitivity allows manufacturers to promote a detector as giving Instant-On Protection.

Whatever features you find most important to the way you drive, we can help you choose the best radar detector system for you.  Stop by one of our stores today and we can walk through all the options and installation for your vehicle.

Don’t Leave These Things in a Hot Vehicle

Summer-Car-CareIt’s the first day of summer and that means the sun and heat has officially arrived! That also means taking care of the interior of your vehicle. When your car is parked all day while you’re at work, or even just while you’re in the grocery store; you know it’s going to be hot when you get back in it. If the temperature outside is in the 90s, your vehicle’s interior can reach well beyond 120 degrees Fahrenheit.  You may not have thought of this before, but there are certain things that shouldn’t be left in a hot vehicle.

  • Wax Items: Seems like a no-brainer right? Just don’t leave a candle to melt, right? Wrong.  Items that shouldn’t be left behind include lipstick, chap sticks, sunscreens, lotions, and crayons too. Imagine any of those melting into your upholstery or the carpet, and it’s not a pretty sight.
  • Aerosol Cans: These things have warning labels for a reason.  When the temperature of a can of say WD-40 or hairspray gets to a certain level, the gasses inside can combust and create an explosion. That’s right, an explosion, inside your vehicle, not to mention the dangerous fumes they can give of too.
  • Can Soda: These definitely don’t do well in high temperatures. The carbonation within an unopened can acts as a gas and expands as the temperature heats up; causing an explosion that will leave your interior a sugary mess.
  • Gum and Candy: Maybe you’ve thought of this one, because you know how candies melt just in your pocket or in your hand. Now imagine that sticky, gooey, or chocolatey mess in your car seats.  Do a check of under OCFIAT4-1all the seats to make sure a stray treat hasn’t hidden itself away just to make a big mess later.
  • Dairy Products: Probably an item that you don’t always have in your car anyway, but what if you lose a carton of milk or a yogurt out of your grocery bag one day? Give it a bit in the heat and you’ll know because of the foul odor that will be spread throughout your vehicle. Make sure you have all your items when getting groceries out of your vehicle, and make sure a little one hasn’t dropped or left behind their drink or snack.

Hopefully you’ve never had to clean up a mess made by any of the above, but if you have, you’re probably not alone.  As the summer sun and heat increases its intensity keep an eye out for any of these items in your vehicle and prevent a headache later on.

**Note: We’ve written this blog post highlighting the everyday things that can cause a mess in a warm vehicle.  We’ve also written this while keeping in mind that it is a basic fact that Children and Animals should NEVER be left in a vehicle unattended.

Why Window Tint is For You!

Window Tint PercentsWindow Tint is the Perfect Accessory for Your Vehicle!

Window tint is a process where a thin sheet of film is applied to a vehicle’s window. Below are some benefits of Window Tinting:

  1. Window tinting protects you from the sun – it blocks up to 60% of the sun’s heat and blocks 98% of damaging 2016 Civic Window Tint Gloss Black Vinyl Roofultraviolet (UV) rays. It not only protects your vehicle’s interior, but also your skin from sun damage.
  2. More privacy – window tint film keeps people on the outside from being able to look into the vehicle’s interior; lessening the chance that a thief will see something they like and break in.
  3. It can prevent shattering glass – if you ever get into a collision, the film can help keep the window from separating and shattering.
  4. You’ll be fighting global warming – when your windows are tinted, you will have a cooler car, allowing you to use less energy to cool the vehicle on hot summer days.
  5. Safer Driving – tint reduces the glare from the sun, snow, and headlights.

We also offer Lifetime Limited Warranties against peeling, cracking, and fading.  Contact us today to get more information on window tint for your vehicle!

Reasons To Ride a Motorcycle

Motorcycle-RideWhat’s Riding a Motorcycle All About?

Do you ride? If you answered yes, then you probably understand – riding a motorcycle can be more of a lifestyle than an activity.  If you answered no, you’ve probably still been passed by one on the highway and wondered (or dreamed of) what it’s all about.

Here are a few reasons people ride:

  • Fuel Savings – The fact that bikes can get more than double the fuel economy and have a lower environmental impact of cars is no secret, they’re serious money savers when it comes to gasoline. Some bikes can get 50-70 mpg, and it’s no wonder people ride them for their daily commutes.
  • Easy Parking and Commuting – It’s a given that motorcycles are smaller than cars, making it easier to maneuver and park in tight spaces. Some states even allow bikes to ride between lanes, so getting stuck in traffic can be eliminated.  With a motorcycle you can cut down on your commute time and often even be treated to designated bike only parking spaces.
  • Motorcycle RiderFellowship – Riding definitely comes with a sense of belonging. From being part of an actual motorcycle club/organization down to simply a ‘wave’ at a passing rider, it all adds up to a community bond.
  • Individuality – Yes, riding a motorcycle is one of those things that comes with a huge sense of community, but also lets you be uniquely and unapologetically yourself. Typically expressed through personal style or the customization you’ve done (or plan to do) to your bike.
  • For the Thrill of it! – Nothing feels quite like riding a motorcycle and being at one with a two wheeled machine. The risks involved sometimes even heighten the enjoyment. The sense of freedom and adventure feels more complete on two wheels and remember, it’s about the ride not just the destination.

Columbus Car Audio MotorcycleSo…what’s your reason for riding?

Whether you’ve identified with one (or all!) of the reasons above, or you’ve got your own motives for riding, we can help you customize your bike.  From custom fairing and sound systems, to security systems and lighting effects, we can help you achieve whatever you’re looking for.  Talk to one of our experts today to start your journey.

Mobile Entertainment for your Car

Perhaps you don’t think you need mobile video in your vehicle, but long roadtrips go more smoothly with a backseat entertainment system for the kids! There are a few options when it comes to adding mobile video, it can be a straightforward upgrade or even a customized install.ADV49_1

Drop Down Video Monitors – probably the easiest way to add entertainment to your vehicle.  A monitor with a built in DVD player is installed in the ceiling of the vehicle.  These come in a few select colors and typically between 8 and 10” screens.

AVXMTGHR1D_1Replacement Headrest Monitors – Just like it sounds, replace your current headrests with ones that have built in monitors and DVD players.  With headrests, you have the options of having one shared DVD player or two separate ones, in case your backseat passengers can’t agree on what to watch.  These come in a few select colors and typically 7 or 8” screens, with HDMI input available as well.

Advent HR7008BLACK3-4.Custom Factory Interior Match Headrest Monitors – Go with this option if you want to keep the exact factory look, color, and feel of your vehicle’s interior while adding video. Like the above, these are replacement headrests, but are exact factory color matched for your vehicle. These have 7 or 8” screens, option of one or two DVD players, with HDMI input available as well.

Advent HeadphonesHeadphones – The easiest way for your backseat passengers to listen to their movie or show.  They’ll be able to beat the road noise, or other passenger chatter by being fully immersed in their video’s sound. (Plus – it’s one less distraction for the Driver! You can still listen to your music, or carry on your own conversation while the kids stay happy.)

Some may argue that just adding an iPad or tablet holder in a vehicle is an easier andless invasive way to get mobile video, but we don’t recommend that. An installed system is always there, available, and ready to use, while an iPad or tablet would need charged, or even connected to WiFi, Audiovox2009Travers_10D023Cwhich isn’t always available. An installed system is also made to be part of and left in a vehicle, where there can be dangers associated with leaving a table sitting in a car during extreme weather.  Keep in mind too, that one tablet might not be able to entertain more than one child.

Let us help you choose which mobile video is right for you.  We can discuss all the options available for your vehicle and can start making your roadtrips even better for all on board!

Winter Road Salt and Paint Protection Film

24534079_bg1The snow has finally arrived in Central Ohio and with it the perils of driving in ice and slush, plus the aftermath of having your vehicle covered in road salt.

Salting roads helps people travel more safely in the ice and snow. The salt lowers water’s freezing point preventing ice buildup on roadways, and helps to melt any ice already formed in below freezing temperatures.

While road salt is necessary for safe transportation in snow and ice, it is also extremely corrosive and over time can cause damage to your vehicle.  Think about when you drive on a treated roadway kicking up the salt and salt water.  Or when you drive behind or pass a salt truck, and see the salt flying out and bouncing down the road at you.  The drawback of winter road salt is that it can cause extensive damage to areas of your vehicle including the doors, fenders, hood, and undercarriage.

Our cars are typically one of the biggest investments we make in our lives and protecting them from the ravages of the road, like salt, is important.  Of course, vehicle accidents happen, but damage from road salt is one that can be prevented.

PPF-Install-6You might be wondering how you can prevent this damage? Well, you can obsessively go to car washes all winter long, but why do that when you can take pro-active action in protecting your investment by installing Paint Protection Film.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) or clear bra, is a thin layer of clear urethane that can be applied to areas of your vehicle that are at high risk for abrasions. (Like the door panels, fenders, mirrors – all those areas most likely to be affected by road salt).

PPF Facts:

  • It’s practically invisible, and won’t change the appearance of your vehicle
  • It’s durable, designed to withstand different temperatures and environments
  • It’s customized to fit your vehicle
  • It does not require any special maintenance
  • It protect your vehicle from scrapes, scuffs, insect stains, small rock damage, and of course, from winter road salt

Check out this video on how we install PPF and contact us today to start protecting your vehicle from unnecessary damage.

Why Should I Care About Remote Car Starter Range?

CA6554 Lifestyle Page ImageIf you’re unfamiliar with remote car starters or have never owned one then range may not strike you as an important feature, but trust us, it is.

You may think that you only need a small amount of range since you’re only going to use it while your car is parked 100 feet from you in your ‘close to the house’ driveway.  For some this may be true, but really think…is that the only place you’ll want to use your remote car starter?  Sure it’s a given that a remote car starter is useful on a cold morning before you leave for work, but it’s also true that your car will need warmed up when you go to lunch, or before your commute home every afternoon. We can almost guarantee that once you get into a warmed up vehicle once, you’ll be hooked and want to use that remote start every chance you get.

starterSo how much range is enough?  Start by thinking of all the places you will park your vehicle over the course of an average week.  Think of where your car sits for periods of time; work, church, school, the grocery store, the mall, etc.  You’ll want to use your remote car starter from those places too, so get a system with enough range to be able to.

Inexpensive remote start systems usually don’t have great range, and it’ll benefit you in the long run to invest a little more in a better system.  Those high end systems typically have better operating frequencies and channels, giving them the power to work through commercial buildings and fight electrical interference.  You Photo, Automate, hand and remote in Snow Large 12-12can even get unlimited range by upgrading to a Smartphone remote start system, these will remote start your vehicle as long as your phone and car are in cell service, eliminating the worry of range.

Range is a great thing to discuss with your salesperson when choosing a remote start, once we know where you’ll be using your system, we can suggest the best one for your needs. Visit us to see all the remote start systems we carry and get more information on which ones would work for you.

Backover Fact Sheet

In the U.S., 50 children are backed over every week because a driver could not see them. Rearview cameras can be easily installed and added to any vehicle to end these predictable tragedies.

blindzoneBlindzones: Every vehicle has one, the area behind it where the driver cannot see even when looking back and using their rear and side view mirrors.

  • Average Blindzone is 15 to 25 feet
  • It depends on your height too, the shorter you are the larger the blindzone
  • Over 60% of backover accidents involve a large vehicle like a Truck or SUV
  • Most drivers are unaware of their blindzones

backover-main-pic(1)Facts and Circumstances:

  • Backovers take place mainly in driveways and parking lots
  • in over 70% of incidents, a parent or close relative is the driver behind the wheel
  • Children do not understand the danger of a slow moving vehicle, and believe if they see the vehicle that the driver can see them
  • Children do not recognize boundaries such as sidewalks, driveways, or parking spaces and often don’t realize they’ve put themselves in danger

  • Install a rearview camera or backup sensors on your vehicle. Many drivers believe they have to wait until they purchase a new vehicle to have a backup camera system, but after market systems can be installed on any vehicle
  • Always walk around and behind a vehicle prior to moving it
  • Teach children that parked vehicles might move and make sure they understand the danger that poses
  • Teach children to never play in, around, or behind a vehicle. The driveway isn’t always a safe place to play
  • Be aware that steep inclines and large SUV’s, Vans, and Trucks can add to the difficulty of seeing behind a vehicle

To reduce the risk of a backover incident, a backup or rearview camera can be installed in the vehicle to give the driver a better view of what’s behind them.  Visit one of our stores today to find out what  backup camera options we have for you.

A Recipe for Success

A Recipe for Success
(Or how we are happy to have helped another local business realize it’s potential!)

The Breakfast Club {delivery} delivers breakfast to your home, that’s what Nikki Stoughton owner of The Breakfast Club {delivery} set out to do in March, 2015. Her vision was to create freshly prepared, gourmet breakfasts and deliver them directly to your table (eliminating cooking, cleaning, waiting in line, and cold carry-out breakfasts). However, she ran into challenges powering the necessary equipment to ensure each breakfast was served fresh and hot, right to a customer’s dining table.

Nikki asked herself; how do I get enough power to my oven to warm it up and keep it hot? Enter Columbus Car Audio. After a recommendation from a close friend, Nikki made a call to one of our Sales Reps Justin to begin working on installation of an appropriate power system. There was a catch, how does she power the oven while she’s driving? We helped to eliminate a generator as a solution, because the fumes don’t have any way to vent out of the Nissan 2500HD she had purchased. We worked on designing a way to power the oven that was sustainable and scalable, despite additional hurdles with vendors as well as logistical delays, eventually delivering what was promised.

“Columbus Car Audio created a relationship that was professional, courteous, and appreciated – all while delivering a solution that exceeded my expectations,”
-Nikki Stoughton.

About the Breakfast Club {delivery}: We created The Breakfast Club {delivery} so you can have breakfast delivered right to your home. We build a bountiful, delicious gourmet breakfast made to order for you and your guests. And then, we deliver it fresh, hot, and plated. Let us create and deliver breakfast to you. And you take all the credit.

Things to Consider When Adding a Subwoofer

Key Specs to Consider When Adding a Subwoofer

Once you decide to add a subwoofer to your audio system, comparing specs can help you decide which subwoofer is best for your needs. Here are some key specs to look at:

  • Power – If you’re looking to really turn your car into a ‘boom car’, then you’ll need plenty of power. Pay attention to RMS power ratings, not peak or max power ratings.  RMS ratings measure continuous power handling and are a much more realistic measure than peak. Also, make sure you match the sub’s power handling to your amp’s power output.
  • Sensitivity – A sub that has a higher sensitivity rating requires less power to produce the same amount of sound as a sub with lower sensitivity. Typically subwoofers designed for sound quality (SQL) have a higher sensitivity rating, although this isn’t an absolute rule.
  • Frequency Range – This gives you an idea of how low a sub can play. The actual performance of the sub though can depend on lot of factors, such as the size, box type, etc. Also keep in mind that while humans can only hear sound down to 20 Hz, we can feel it even lower!
  • Enclosure – The type of enclosure you use will have a big effect on the type of sound the sub will produce. Typically, sealed boxes give you the most accurate sound, while ported enclosures produce more volume.
  • Voice Coils – Choose between single and double voice coils. Dual voice coil (DVC) subwoofers use two separate voice coils, each with its own connections, mounted on one cylinder, connected to a common core. DVC subs are a popular choice for those wanting more flexibility in wiring their sound systems.
  • Size – If your end goal is to have a system that plays loud and low (and space isn’t an issue), go for the biggest subs. Keep in mind though, that when properly powered and in the right enclosure, smaller subs can put out plenty of sound.
  • Impedance – Most subwoofers are rated at 4ohms impedance, but 2-ohm and 8-ohm are starting to be more common. When you’ve chosen a subwoofer, look for an amplifier that will match up to your sub in terms of power rating and impedance.

There are many factors that go into choosing a subwoofer for your system, but we’re here to help!  We will guide you through the process of determining what you’re really looking for in an audio system, and help you choose the right products. And now is the best time to upgrade to a subwoofer – during our Annual Amp & Sub Sale!

Columbus Car Audio

Why Upgrade Factory Speakers

Simply put, factory speakers aren’t the best. The vehicle manufacturer gives low priority to a vehicle’s sound system, giving you something that’s just OK. By replacing your factory speakers with higher quality aftermarket speakers you will experience better sound quality, crispness, and clarity.

Most factory systems use “full range” speakers, which means each speaker has a single driver that’s responsible for producing high, medium, and low tones.  Aftermarket speakers can have multiple drivers – woofers, tweeters, midranges – for better sound.  Each of these is built to accurately reproduce a specific segment of your music’s sound.  With upgraded speakers, you’ll be amazed to hear details that weren’t audible with factory stock speakers.

Premium aftermarket speakers tend to be constructed better than factory speakers and made with higher quality materials. Brand name aftermarket speakers are built from more sophisticated designs and state-of-the-art technology. Vehicle manufacturers don’t always think about great sounding speakers, but Car Audio manufactures do, and are always pushing the envelope to create something better.

Adding new car speakers can be one of the most effective and affordable ways to upgrade your sound system.  At Columbus Car Audio, we hand pick the products we carry, and our experts will help you select the best possible speaker to meet your needs.  What’s right for one customer may not be right for another.

Adding a Subwoofer To Your Audio System

Subwoofer speakers are designed to produce low frequency sounds, or bass.  Even if you don’t want to rattle the windows of the car next to you at a traffic light, bass is an integral part of any audio system, giving you depth and realism.  Most high end factory systems include built in subwoofers, but they are usually too small to optimally handle low frequency sounds.

What type of subwoofer do you need?

  • Component Subwoofers – This option is just the speaker itself, meaning you’ll have get or build an enclosure. These are ideal for those who want a highly customized car audio system.
  • Enclosed Subwoofers – Already pre-mounted in a box designed to accommodate the subwoofer. This eliminates the need to choose or build an enclosure, so you won’t have to do as much customization work. These typically come in different sizes and shapes so you can choose the best fit for your vehicle and space.
  • Powered Subwoofer – Includes the amplifier that’s needed to power the subwoofer all in one compact enclosure. These subwoofers are good for installing in a vehicle with space limitations, but their small drivers and amp are not ideal for producing big bass. They are, however, relatively simple to install and are an easy add on to a factory system.
  • Vehicle Specific – Designed specifically to fit in your vehicle. If you’re not looking for a custom sound system install, these provide a discreet and space saving install.  They’ll likely suffice for most listening needs, but again, they will not create a huge bass sound like a custom installed component subwoofer would.

*Keep in mind that all subwoofers (except the powered subwoofer) will need an external amplifier that provides power.

Whatever type of sound you’re looking to achieve, we can help you get it.  Visit us to speak to an expert on which subwoofer option is best for your needs.

Why add an Amplifier?

Some people think that amplifiers are just for car audio enthusiasts and those with ‘boom’ cars who want the whole world to hear their bass.  In reality, an amplifier is an essential addition for anyone who cares about sound quality.  Adding an amplifier can provide cleaner sound, more power, and better performance, improving the experience of listening to music in your car.

Whether you listen to rap, heavy metal, or classical music, want to rattle your windows or just get concert quality music, your audio system can greatly benefit from an amplifier

Benefits of adding an amplifier:

  • Better Sound Quality – Adding an amplifier can improve your sound by being a power source to really drive your speakers without straining them. A factory stereo’s built in amplifier is no match for the sound quality you can get from a separate aftermarket amplifier.
  • Volume – A loud engine, noisy air conditioning, and traffic are noises your stereo sometimes cannot compete with. An amplifier will help increase the volume so you can hear your music.
  • Power for Speakers and a Subwoofer – An amplifier can provide the correct power for getting optimal performance out of higher quality aftermarket speakers. Subwoofers require much more power than typical speakers and a separate amplifier can be necessary when adding a subwoofer.

Adding an amplifier is not something you’d consider a DIY job – visit the experts at Columbus Car Audio to get advice on which amplifier is best for your needs and your vehicle, and get it installed the right way the first time.

Plus – now’s the best time to add an amplifier, during our Annual Amp & Sub Sale.  View the Specials HERE.
