What Is The Difference Between A Sunroof & A Moonroof?

What Is The Difference Between A Sunroof & A Moonroof?

Technically, there is a difference between a sunroof and a moonroof, but today everybody mostly uses the terms interchangeably, and the truth is a moonroof is a type of sunroof.

SunroofOriginally a sunroof was a solid body-colored panel that could pop up or be removed, whereas the term moonroof was introduced in the 1970’s to describe any panel in the vehicle’s roof that is made of glass.  Today sunroof is simply a generic term used to describe any panel in the roof of a vehicle which lets in light and/or air.

Moonroof is now most commonly used to describe glass panel inbuilt sunroofs, where the panel slides between the vehicle roof and headliner.  The majority of new cars technically have moonroofs, as what was originally considered a sunroof has pretty much gone out of style.

Sunroof Information

Common Misconceptions About Sunroof Installation

1.  All sunroof installers and brands are the same.
The best sunroof on the market won’t make up for a poor installation by an inexperienced installer.  We’ve been in the  industry for over thirty years, and all of our install technicians are ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certified.  As for the brands we carry, we sell Webasto sunroofs, which have proven themselves through rigorous component and systems testing, plus lifetime warranties on many models.

 2.  All sunroofs leak.
No.  Some sunroofs do leak, but good quality sunroofs that are installed properly do not.  Leaky sunroofs are the result of unprofessional installation by unqualified suppliers.  Webasto inbuilt sunroofs are designed with an extensive water management system to direct the water that encroaches past the seal into a dedicated water channel and out through drain tubes, keeping the interior of your vehicle water free.  Some cheaper sunroofs even have seals made of neoprene that when exposed to weather, rapidly deteriorate, leading to leaks.

3.  You should only get a sunroof if you don’t have air conditioning.
Although some people may invest in a sunroof because their car isn’t equipped with air conditioning, most people want the open-air feeling you get with a sunroof.  Sunroofs can open up a small car, giving it a much larger feel, which can be very nice on long road trips, and they ensure pleasant ventilation with fresh air.

4.  The company that gives you the lowest price is the one you should go with.
Problems can arise when you make your installation decision based on cheapest price. That low price you were quoted somewhere may not be for a high quality sunroof.  The company may give you a low price to get you in and then install an inexpensive, poor quality sunroof without you knowing and most often with a very short term warranty or none at all.

For more information about this topic and what our install technicians can do for you, please contact us today!

Aftermarket Remote Starts vs. Factory Remote Starts

All remote starters are not treated equally, especially when comparing the aftermarket ones we install with factory systems. Below we’ve listed the main benefits of an aftermarket remote start system,

Aftermarket Remote Start vs. Factory Remote Start

Aftermarket Remote Start vs. Factory Remote Start

  1. You don’t need a new car to have new car tech! Compustar (the remote start brand we carry!) remote start systems can be installed in over 90% of vehicles on the road. This includes many manual transmission vehicles, diesels, hybrids, and luxury models.
  2. Aftermarket systems are simply more powerful and more reliable than most OEM or Factory remote start systems.
  3. Aftermarket remote starts offer further operating range. With some working up to 3miles away from the vehicle, with upgrades available to remote start from your phone. OEM remote starts typically just have the same range as the factory key fob, which can sometime be less than 100 ft.
  4. 2-way confirmation is not a thing with factory remote starts. There are aftermarket systems with LED and LCD screens that confirm to you that your vehicle has received the remote start command and in fact started. Without 2-way, you could walk outside to find your command failed without you knowing and the vehicle never started.
  5. Aftermarket remotes are fully customizable. We can program your new remote to control other vehicle features too, like rolling down your windows, popping the trunk, opening sliding doors, and even integrating alarm systems too.
  6. Longer run times. With a Compustar remote start system, you can choose from how long you want the run time of your remote start to be, up to a maximum of 45 mins. Most OEM remote starts have a run time of just 10 minutes or less, which sometimes isn’t enough time to get your car warm and de-frosted how you like it.

Debunking Remote Start Myths

Are you thinking of getting a remote start but you’ve heard too many negative things about them, or maybe you don’t think it’s for you, or maybe you’re just not sure? We’re here to help! We’ve taken the most common myths people hear about remote start systems and debunked them below:

1. Having a remote start means carrying an extra, bulky key fob.

False.
Many remote start systems we carry come with compact design remotes that are smaller than most factory key fobs.  Also, for many vehicles we can integrate a remote start into your factory key fob, so you won’t have to carry anything extra, you’d just remote start by hitting the lock button 3 times.

Remote Start Myths

2. A factory remote start is better than an aftermarket one.

False.
Factory remote starters are basic and often lack features that are easily added with an aftermarket system. The two biggest differences are aftermarket systems have farther operating range (how far away from the car it will work) and offer 2-way confirming capabilities.

3. A remote starter is only useful in the Winter.

False.
Yes, you typically think of a remote starter to warm up your car but they’re just as handy in the summer too.  Use your remote start in the summer to cool down your car, so you won’t have to get into a stuffy vehicle with a scalding steering wheel or leather seats.

4. My car has a manual transmission so I can’t get a remote start.

False.
Most systems are manual transmission compatible, but sometimes will need extra parts and/or labor. We use a ‘reservation’ mode to ensure that the vehicle is parked out of gear ready to remote start. Reservation mode typically entails setting your emergency brake, releasing, and setting again to ensure the car is ready to be remote started.

Remote Start Myths

5. It seems easy enough, I can install a remote starter by myself.

False.
Today’s vehicles are sophisticated and integrating remote starter technology is a complicated procedure that only trained professionals should attempt. Plus, if we run into an issue, we have access to the top manufacturer’s technical support.

6. Remote starters are just bad for a car.

False.
Simply put, a remote start runs your engine the same way it runs when you start it with the key. When you allow your vehicle to warm up before driving away, the fluids in your engine will lubricate critical components better.

7. An aftermarket remote start system will void a vehicle’s warranty.

False.
This is just not true thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This prevents OEMs from voiding a warranty because of the addition of aftermarket products.

8. Remote start systems waste gas.

False.
They use the same amount of gas as starting your car with your key.

9. Remote starters are illegal in Ohio.

False.
It’s illegal to leave a car running, unattended, with the keys in the ignition. With a remote start the key is not in the ignition. Remote starts even come factory standard on a lot of new cars, and they wouldn’t if they were actually illegal.

10. My car is more likely to get stolen when it’s remote started.

False.
With a remote start all the safety features of your car are still there; your doors will still be locked when it’s running. Also, if someone does manage to get into your vehicle, if they go to put it in gear the remote starter will shut off when the brake pedal is pushed, preventing them from driving off.

11. I don’t need one because I have a garage.

False.
Maybe by parking in a garage your car doesn’t get snow covered, but it still gets cold in there, right? And do you also park in a garage when you go to the grocery store? Or the movie theater? Or when out shopping? Trust us, you’ll use it more than you think you will!

12. I can’t get one for my car because I have a diesel engine.

False.
We can safely install a system giving your vehicle enough time for the glow plugs to warm up.

13. I can’t install a remote start because I lease my car.

False.
We said earlier that it does not void any warranty, plus the system can be removed when it’s time to trade back in.

Now that we’ve de-bunked some common myths or arguments against getting a remote start, what’s stopping you? Contact us today to find out all the options available for your vehicle and we’ll happily answer any questions or address any reservations you have about getting one!

Window Tint Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is window tint? Our Window Tint FAQ

Window tint is a thin laminate film sometimes infused with metals. Window tint comes in a variety of shades and colors to match the look and feel of any vehicle.

Window Tint FAQ

What are the benefits of window tint?

  • Heat Rejection– Tinting your windows can make the interior of your car up to 60% cooler when sitting outside on a summer day.
  • UV Protection– Tinting your windows can keep up to 99 percent of harmful UV rays out, protecting you against skin cancer.
  • Privacy – Keep the valuables you keep in your car out of sight from potential burglars. Tint makes it harder to see in your windows.
  • Protect Upholstery– The sun’s rays not only heat your car’s interior but it leads to leather cracking and fading of upholstery. Ultraviolet rays are the main cause of both fade and deterioration. Window tint can screen out 99% of the damaging UV rays that can lead to cloth seats fading or leather seats cracking.
  • Glass Break Protection– Window film adds a degree of shatter resistance to your window glass. These films bond to glass and help hold dangerous glass fragments in place, should breakage occur due to accident, natural disaster, or illegal entry. Window film can keep the glass from shattering in the event of an accident, keeping you protected from flying glass shards.
  • Aesthetic– Tinting your windows gives your vehicle a custom, sleek, & sophisticated look.
  • Reduces Glare Day or Night– Tinting your windows can help prevent glare from the sun, snow, and headlights.
  • Saves Gas– You won’t find yourself running the air conditioner as high or for as long, saving you money on gas.

How do I choose a shade?

Shades and percentages depend on visual transmission levels (VTL). These are represented through the use of percentages representing the percentage of visible light the film will allow through. All of our films come in a variety of different shades, and we have samples of all films and shades on display in our stores for you to see before choosing.  The lower the percentage number, the dark the film. (5% is darker and allows less light through than 15%)

Window Tint FAQ

What are the legal window tint restrictions in Ohio?

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 5 inches of the windshield.
  • Front Side windows: Must allow more than 50% of light in.
  • Back Side windows: Any darkness can be used.
  • Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

Does Darker tint equal more heat rejection?

Nope.  Our ceramic film boasts and IR coating which blocks out the UV rays, visible light, and infrared heat no matter the shade. This allows it to not only reject greater amounts of heat, but also eliminates the need for the film to be really dark to get that max heat rejection. These newer technology films come in the same shades as traditional films, as well as coming in virtually clear shades as light as 80% & 90%.

Is the tint applied to the outside or inside of the glass?

Our window tint is applied to the inside of your window.  During our install process we first lay the film on the outside of your window and then use a heat gun to shrink the film to the size and curvature of your window.  We then take that film to the inside where it’s actually applied and installed to stick.

Will having my back window tinted cause the defroster not to work?

Absolutely not. Tinting your back window will actually assist in defrosting your back window.

What will tint look like on the black dotted edge on my rear window?

Most cars have a black ceramic ‘frit’ edge on the rear window. These dots are thick and can sometimes prevent the film from fully adhering in between them. This results in a white/grayish looking strip in that area, but really isn’t very noticeable and doesn’t affect the quality of the tint or install.

Does old window tint need to be removed before new can be applied? And can you do it?

Yes and yes.  Old film will need to be removed before we can install new and that does add additional cost and time to the install process. We can also remove window tint for you, even if you’re not getting new tint, maybe you want to change shades or maybe you bought a used car with tint and you don’t want it.

Why do some vehicles have a purple colored tint or have bubbles in the window?

Window tint of a low quality is very likely to deteriorate or “bubble” overtime and discolor from dark black/gray to that purple hue you sometimes see. We use Suntek Films which are high quality films and offer protection against changes in color.

How long do you have to wait to roll down windows after they have been tinted?

Your new tint will take 3 to 5 days to fully dry.  This allows the film to cure and adhere to the glass before the window is moved. To be safe wait until then to roll your windows down.

I just had my windows tinted, why do they look hazy?

The moisture that remains between the film and the glass after installation can cause a hazy, streaky, blotchy appearance. It takes several days for the adhesive/film to completely cure. The remaining moisture will evaporate through the film; this process may take a couple of days, or even a couple of months. When the water evaporates completely, your windows should have excellent clarity. If after several days you still see it, we can always take a look and determine if there’s an issue that needs fixed.

Window Tint FAQ

What should I use to clean my windows after they’ve been tinted?

Clean with a soft, clean cloth and window film safe cleaner or plain water. Don’t use ammonia products! To avoid scratching the film, do not use bristle brushes, abrasive scrubbing sponges, or any cleaning materials that may have been contaminated with dirt particles, as is commonly the case when washing interior and exterior windows with the same cleaning materials. Some brands of paper towels are coarse enough to put fine scratches in the film, even films with scratch resistant, protective hard coat finish. While these scratches may be too thin to be seen at the beginning, they can damage the polished look of the film over time.

My tint is dry, but I see imperfections, why?

Some degree of dust contamination and/or minor imperfections are typically present in glass window and window tint film application.  Pre-existing flaws or scratches on the glass are also more noticeable after window tint is installed. We’re always happy to examine any imperfection and see if it’s normal or if there was an issue with the tint or installation.

What if I scratch my window tint?

Unfortunately, scratches happen, especially over time.  We can remove old tint and replace with new any time.  If you’re afraid this might happen to you, we do offer an extended No Fault Protection Plan at an additional cost. This warranty covers tint replacement in the event of seat belt chips, damage from pets or kids, damage from cargo, and even if you clean your tinted windows with the wrong solution or cloth.

1970 Chevelle Custom Audio Install

Classic cars deserve new technology and great car audio too! This 1970 Chevelle came to us wanting a totally re-hauled one-of-a-kind audio system and we delivered

We built custom kick panels wrapped in black leather to match the rest of the interior, then we installed a pair of JL Audio C5-650 components speakers with tweeters utilizing the factory dash speaker locations.

A custom rear deck was built to house a pair of JL Audio C1-690 6×9 speakers, we wrapped it in black leather to match with black grill cloth covering the port for the subwoofer enclosure.  We then added a 12″ JL Audio W7 subwoofer in a custom slot ported enclosure that is ported through the rear deck.

We hand built panels to fit in the trunk and kept the design in line with the factory door panels to make it look more like something GM might’ve done from the factory.  The trunk is trimmed in black leather with stainless steel rods inserted throughout the panels just like factory. We wanted to add something a little more new-age though, so we frosted the Chevelle logo into clear acrylic and back lit it with color changing led lights.

2008 Yukon Denali Custom Makeover

This 2008 Yukon Denali came to visit our Morse road store to get a complete make over!  We installed custom Katzkin leather interior on all seats, the client chose black leather and red suede inserts.

We then replaced the factory grey headliner with a new black suede material, and also wrapped the grey sun visors to match.  From there we wrapped the A, B, and C pillars in a red suede, and vinyl dyed all plastic pieces inside the vehicle including handles and seat belt brackets red to match.

This Denali also got new headlight housings and bulbs in the front of the vehicle, and Escalade style taillights that we also tinted, were installed in the back for a more custom look.

No truck would be complete without new wheels and tires, plus a leveling kit to accommodate the new wheel/tire sizes.

And of course we did a full custom audio upgrade too! This Denali got the Kenwood DMX957XR Digital Multimedia Receiver with 6.8 Display, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For speakers, we installed Hertz Mille Pro all around and included our sound deadening treatment to cut down on rattles and unwanted sound. We also installed two different Audio Control amplifiers; the LC-6.1200 for the interior speakers, and the LC-1.1500 for the subwoofers.  We completed this custom audio job with a custom built enclosure holding (4) 10″ W3 subwoofers from JL Audio to fit in the back that was wrapped in black material with a suede insert to match the new interior.

10 Tips for Getting Your Car Winter-Ready!

While Winter weather brings a cozy atmosphere to the indoors, it makes driving a bit more complicated and sometimes treacherous.

The NOAA is predicting a La Niña winter, which means consistent winter storms for the northern United States. This type of weather pattern, however, is often unpredictable, so it’s best to be prepared for the worst. Make sure your vehicle is ready for the cold weather with the winter safety checklist below!

1. Schedule Your Routine Service

Don’t wait until the last minute. Go ahead and get your vehicle serviced so you have time to have any work done before winter hits. You can even consider scheduling your next service appointment ahead of time to be sure your vehicle stays in good condition throughout the season.

2. Make Sure Your Tires are Winter-Ready

To make sure your tires are in good shape for winter, use the classic penny test! Not sure how to do it? Check out the instructional graphic above!

When you’re conducting the penny test, also be sure to look at the type of tires you have. If you have any big winter trips planned, it would be good to invest in a different set.

3. Check on Your Coolant System

When conducting a coolant check, be sure to check the levels as well as the type of coolant you are currently using. This is important because in harsh weather conditions, if you don’t have the correct coolant, the liquid can freeze and expand, damaging your vehicle. It’s also good to have your technician check for any leaks.

4. Check or Change Your Windshield Wipers

This part is simple enough! Check out your windshield wipers to make sure they’re in good condition and ready for harsh winter weather. While you’re at it, be sure to fill up your washer fluid reservoir.

5. Plan Ahead for Travel Safety

If you’re taking any long trips during the winter, be sure to plan your routes ahead of time, and have a contingency plan in place in case of emergencies. Also, be sure to refer back to tip #2 before you hit the road! Good tires and brakes (see #9) are one of the most important parts of travel safety!

6. Assemble a Winter Emergency Kit

Be prepared for winter road emergencies. Create a kit including but not limited to: ice scrapers, a shovel, a flashlight (with extra batteries, to be safe), flares, food, water, and a blanket. It’s also good to study up on what to do in case of a winter emergency.

7. Make Sure Your Battery is Winter Ready

When you go in to have your vehicle serviced, be sure to have your battery tested by the technician. They’ll be able to advise you on whether or not your battery will last through winter. To be extra safe, always carry jumper cables with you.

8. Check Your Lights

Headlight and brake lights are always a necessity, of course, but with the sun setting earlier, it’s very important to make sure your lights aren’t burnt out. It’s also important to keep extra bulbs in your glove box, just in case!

9. Inspect Your Brakes

I don’t have to tell you why brakes are important! Don’t delay getting new brakes, especially not in winter weather conditions. If you don’t know how to do this yourself, most standard car inspections will check this out for you.

10. Get a Remote Starter!

Remote starters really are the best way to make your winter more comfortable and safe! On cold winter mornings, use your Compustar remote to warm-up your engine and defrost your vehicle. This will save you time in the morning, and means less wear and tear for your engine!

One thing that really sets Compustar remote starters apart from factory systems in the advanced range and 2-way capabilities of our remotes. This means, your commands will succeed every time, and you never have to worry about walking out to a cold car! Contact us to learn more about the remote start systems we offer.

We hope this winter checklist helps keep you safe and comfortable all winter long!

Winter Car Care Tips

Ohio winter is on it’s way, here’s a few winter car care tips for keeping your car in tip-top shape during the cold and snow:

Winter Weather

  • Test Your Car Battery! Did you know According to AAA, if your car battery is three years old or older, it is at risk for failure?! Both the heat and the cold can drain them. Check it and replace now if necessary before you get stranded in a cold parking lot.
  • Check Your Tires. It’s important to check your tire pressure often. Under-inflated tires can wear down long before they should and lose traction. It’s also a good idea to switch to winter tires to get even better traction during snow and ice storms.

Snow Tires

  • Keep Your Gas Tank Half Full. What if you get stuck in the snow, or your commute is taking quadruple the normal time due to icy roads? You’ll be glad you had enough gas to make it where you need to go.
  • Replace Your Windshield Wipers. Make sure these are in good condition for driving while it’s snowing. Cold weather can take the life out of wipers quickly, so keep an eye on them. Plus, raising them when you know it’s going to be icy will prevent them from freezing to your windshield.

Winter Driving

  • Check Your Lights. During the winter months, it’s darker for longer and you’ll use your headlights more often than not. You don’t want to get stuck driving at night in the snow with only one headlight.
  • Check Your Brakes. This is especially important in the winter.  Making sure your brakes are in good working condition will help you when it comes to braking in snowy condition or heavy traffic.  Make sure to check your brake lights too – you’ll want the driver behind you to know you’re slowing/stopping!

Why Should I Care About Remote Car Starter Range?

Remote Car Starter Range is an important feature when it comes to choosing the right remote start for your vehicle. If you’re unfamiliar with remote car starters or have never owned one then range may not strike you as very important, but trust us, it is.

Remote Car Starter Range

You may think that you only need a small amount of range since you’re only going to use it while your car is parked 100 feet from you in your ‘close to the house’ driveway.  For some this may be true, but really think…is that the only place you’ll want to use your remote car starter?

Sure it’s a given that a remote car starter is useful on a cold morning before you leave for work, but it’s also true that your car will need warmed up when you go to lunch, or before your commute home every afternoon. We can guarantee that if you get into a warmed up vehicle once, you’ll be hooked and want to use that remote start every chance you get!

How Much Range is Enough?

Start by thinking of all the places you will park your vehicle over the course of an average week.  Think of where your car sits for periods of time; work, church, school, the grocery store, the mall, etc.  You’ll want to use your remote car starter from those places too, so get a system with enough range to be able to.

Remote Car Starter Range

Inexpensive remote start systems usually don’t have great range, and it’ll benefit you in the long run to invest a little more in a better system.  Those high end systems typically have better operating frequencies and channels, giving them the power to work through commercial buildings and fight electrical interference.  You can even get unlimited range by upgrading to a Smartphone remote start system, these will remote start your vehicle as long as your phone and car are in cell service, eliminating the worry of range.

Let Us Help!

Range is a great thing to discuss with your salesperson when choosing a remote start, once we know where you’ll be using your system, we can suggest the best one for your needs and show you how to use it. Visit us to see all the remote start systems we carry and get more information on which ones would work for you.

How to Shop for a Remote Starter

So you’ve decided you’re done with getting into a cold car and done with scraping your windshield in the winter – you’ve made the right decision! Getting a remote car starter installed can save you from battling the cold weather every time you go to get in your car. (P.S. You can use one in the summer to crank the A/C too!)

Ice Scraper

But maybe you’re not sure where to start shopping for one? We can help! Here’s a few tips and things to think about while you’re shopping for a remote start.

Where to Buy?

The most important thing about getting a remote start installed is finding a place that can do it. This is definitely not a DIY install so you’ll want someone professional and experienced. You’ll want to put your car in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing when it comes to installing this equipment. Not to brag, but we’ve been installing in the 12V industry for over 38 years and our experienced install technicians are fully trained and equipped to handle your vehicle properly. Plus, we offer a lifetime workmanship guarantee on all of our installations.

Consider Your Car

While many different remote start brands and models are available not all are compatible with every vehicle.  Your vehicle may require additional parts (like a bypass module) or additional labor to make a remote start work properly. Features like factory security systems, push button starts, and standard transmissions are all factors in considering which remote start will work with your vehicle. We’re always happy to discuss any additional components that may or may not be needed to make a remote start work for your vehicle.

Remote Start Range

Ask yourself where you’ll be starting your car from? It matters because different remote starts have different ranges. Will you be starting your car from inside your house right next to your driveway? Or maybe from your office while your car is parked in the back of the big office lot? You’ll want to make sure you purchase one that will work when you need it to.

Consider Price

It’s true what they say, you get what you pay for. And what you should be paying for is high quality technology and knowledgeable installation. So it may not be best to go with the cheapest price you find. Maybe you’re shopping around online, that’s smart to research, but you might not be seeing an accurate price.

Some retailers online don’t include the price of installation, or the price of any additional parts your specific vehicle may need. And some low cost models might not have the range you’ll need. When it comes to your car, don’t cut corners, invest in what you’re installing in it.

We’ll be happy to walk you through our pricing structure and we’ll always be upfront about if your vehicle needs additional parts and additional costs. (We’ll be honest, most newer vehicles do require some extra attention, so don’t always assume the price you see online is 100% accurate.)

When to Shop

You’ve gotten this far, decided to get a remote start and maybe you’ve even picked out a model. The next step is to install it, but when? Simply put, do it now. Install it now before this winter hits, before you’ve scraped your first window for the year, and before the first snow flake falls. Be prepared, it’s that simple! It’ll benefit you to do it now not only because you’ll beat the weather, but you’ll also beat the rush of people who realize they need a remote start too when the weather turns. Once the frost starts coming every morning our install garage fills up quickly with remote start installations every day, so schedule your vehicle now.

Shopping Around vs. Buying Here

Shopping around for the best deal when it comes to upgrading your ride? Maybe you’ve found a really inexpensive head unit on Amazon? Or a too-good-to-be-true price on a remote start? Now you just need us to install it, right?

We can’t blame you for trying to make the most of your money, but there are some major reasons why going this route might not actually be your best value.

The problems with bringing in products purchased elsewhere:

  1. We may not be familiar with the brand. We’ve been in this industry for 40+ years, and have practically seen and sold it all, but there are new and imported inexpensive brands popping up all the time. The downfall with these is they might not last for years to come like some trusted brands have. Over the years, we’ve discovered the best, most trusted brands and products, and those are the ones we offer in our stores.
  2. We may not have access to your product’s technical support. Being a retailer of certain brands give us access to those vendor’s technical support channels, if we don’t sell a brand, we won’t have access to their insider information. Sometimes, issues with installation or compatibility arise and if it’s a brand we sell, we can easily talk to their support network and find a quick solution. If a problem arises with the product you brought us from Amazon, we can’t always figure it out so quickly and efficiently.
  3. We may not be able to show you how to use your product. We know the ins and outs, tips and tricks for every product we carry. If we don’t carry the product, we might not be able to easily show you how to use your new equipment. Part of buying from us is you know you’re getting that tutorial when you walk out the door, and we just can’t guarantee it otherwise. Plus, when it’s purchased from us we’ll be able to answer any questions if they arise down the road.
  4. We simply offer a better warranty on the products we carry and install. What if the product you brought us is bad out of the box or if it fails six months down the road? If that’s the case, there’s nothing we can do about it. When a product is purchased from us, you’ll get the manufacturer warranty on it plus the lifetime work guarantee on all the labor. (We also offer extended warranty options too). Basically, if you purchase and install with us, we’ve got your back no matter what.
  5. It boils down to customer satisfaction. What if after we install what you brought us you don’t like it? When a product is purchased and installed by us, it puts us in complete control and ensures we can solve any issues and make you happy. In the long run, isn’t that better than saving $50?
  6. Buyer Beware! Sometimes those products that are crazy cheap or seem too-good-to-be-true, are counterfeit.

Every one of our staff understands that clients have budgets. We’re not saying we can’t work with budgets; we’re saying sometimes you get what you pay for.  We encourage you to come to us with a price point and goals in mind, and we’ll go from there on finding a solution that not only sounds great but is reliably installed and tuned properly.

We also understand we might not offer the lowest prices on certain products, because of all the extras that you’ll get when working with us. Ask yourself before you purchase elsewhere, do you want the lowest price or the best value for your money?

All You Need to Know About Ceramic Coating

Ceramic Coating; What it is & What It Does.

You strive to keep your vehicle looking like new, you wash it on a regular basis, you wax it, and probably get it detailed. But, despite all your efforts, you still see swirl marks, small chips, water spots, and dirt and grime that come back quickly. Introducing the solution; Ceramic Coating!

What is Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied by hand to the exterior of a vehicle. This liquid creates a semi-permanent bond with your vehicle’s paint to create a layer of protection that doesn’t wash away or break down and can last up to 4 years.

Benefits

This additional layer of protection keeps your car looking like new with minimal maintenance and adds substantial value to your vehicle.

  • Protection from UV Damage – Ceramic coating will protect against harmful UV rays and gradual paint fading that comes with exposure to the sun.
  • Paint Protection – It protects against small scratches and dings from road debris. It can withstand a great deal of damage without showing ill-effects on the body of the car.
  • Protects Against Chemicals – Some chemicals, like those found in bird droppings, gasoline, brake fluid, and shaving cream can be damaging to a car’s paint. This coating serves as a barrier between them and your paint job.
  • Easy to Clean – It’s hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. Water will bead on the vehicle’s surface and slide off easily. Dirt and grime will have a hard time sticking to your vehicle and can be removed with significantly less effort.
  • Shine & Gloss – Ceramic Coating enhances the reflective properties of your car’s paint and clear coat; resulting in a POP of high gloss finish.

How It’s Applied

Ceramic Coating application takes time and should be done professionally, here’s how we do it:

  • We properly wash your vehicle to remove any and all dirt and grime and use a clay bar if necessary.
  • Then comes the the paint correction step; we polish or buff out any swirls, imperfections, and scratches in the paint. Your vehicle is then inspected to ensure all blemishes have been corrected and the surface is in its best condition before we apply the ceramic coating.

  • We then use a Shield Prep solution, applying to the paint and then wiping off one panel at a time with a microfiber towel. This cleans any wax residue or polishing oils left behind, leaving a cleaned and prepped surface for the Ceramic Coating to cling to.
  • Next comes the Ceramic Coating; working one panel or small section at a time, we apply the coating directly on the paint using an applicator sponge. It’s applied in even horizontal lines followed by even vertical lines for complete coverage.

  • The coating will sit and “cure” for a short time, before we wipe off all residue. After all residue is gone, the coating needs to fully cure and adhere to the vehicle, which can take up to 24 hours.

The Different Window Tint Films

Been looking into getting your windows tinted? Come across some terms you’re not familiar with? We’re here to help break down the differences between film types; Dyed, Metallized, Ceramic, and Carbon.

Dyed Window Tint Film

Pretty much what it sounds like, a film that contains a layer of colored dye underneath the protective top coat.

This film uses the dye to absorb solar heat from light rays providing some heat rejection. Unfortunately, dyed films are not as color stable as some other films and fade over time from UV exposure.  This causes the black film to turn more of a purple color and its heat rejection power also diminishes.

While it does change the appearance of the vehicle, the heat-rejection is not particularly high. Most people choose this film because of its affordability and appearance, rather than its performance.

Metallized Window Tint Film

This type of film is created by embedding metallic particles into the film layers.

These metallic particles reflect heat and light rays away from your vehicle and give off a shiny, reflective appearance. The metal elements within the film also strengthen the window making it more shatter and scratch resistant. Metallized films offer better heat rejection than dyed films and are less prone to color fading.

A downside to this film is the metallic properties often interfere with technology in the vehicle. Your GPS could be unusable, you could lose cell phone reception, and it can also cause radio reception to give out.

Ceramic Window Tint Film

This film does not contain any metal or dye but contains ceramic particles and is both nonconductive and nonmetallic.

The ceramic elements reflect and reduce solar heat and UV rays from entering the car. While it reflects and absorbs high levels of light, it also allows for maximum visibility, resists glare and fading, and is highly shatter-proof.

This film has higher heat rejection than both dyed and metallized films and truly is a performance film with a much higher price tag.

Carbon Window Tint Film

This film is comprised of micro-layers of carbon that block about 40% of infrared light from entering the vehicle.

This tint protects upholstery and leather from fading due to its infrared blocking properties. Carbon layers also keep the vehicle cool, meaning you won’t need to rely on your air conditioning so much during those hot summer months.

Carbon films have a dark matte finish, and they won’t fade over time, making them the more durable and reliable film on the market.

This type of film boasts better heat rejection and better UV ray protection than others, and combines a sleek dark look with high performance qualities.

7 Reasons Why People Buy a Remote Car Starter

Reasons To Buy a Remote Car Starter

We’ve asked our customers why they purchased remote starters from us and here is what they said,

1. Extreme cold weather is the number one reason why people buy a remote car starter.

Car exteriors can freeze over in icy rain making key locks and doors freeze shut. Sometimes your car can become sealed shut beneath a layer of ice making it impossible to enter your car to even start it!  But when you have a remote car starter, you can start your car from the warmth of your house without scraping or scratching the exterior of your car just to get in.

Most of our customers buy remote car starters to avoid these extreme weather conditions.  One customer simply said he just wanted to “avoid the freakin’ cold weather!!” when he purchased his.   Avoiding the cold weather tops the list of reasons why people buy a remote car starter.

“I am a busy college student in Nursing School with a tight budget but was tired of running outside to start and scrape my car or to come out to a frozen car after class or clinicals.”

2. Extreme heat is the second most popular reason people want to start their car remotely.

Car interiors can get “hot as hell!” in the summer months and people want to start their car remotely to avoid burning their skin on sun fried car interiors.  Avoiding an “oven baked interior” that burns your bare skin in the summer is also at the top of the list for weather related reasons to buy a remote car starter.

3.  Growing families like the extra support of remote car starters.

Congratulations!  You are having a new baby and want to bring them home comfortably. Having a child is another popular reason people buy remote car starters.   It doesn’t matter if you want to keep them warm in the winter or cool in the summer, a growing family is a happy reason our customers buy remote car starters all year long.  Being able to start the car while helping toddlers put their shoes on or while you strap your baby into the car seat is a hugely convenient! Plus, it gives parents an added sense of support and timing when getting ready to shuttle back and forth from play dates, music lessons, and to school.

“When we had our first child all I could think about is how I wished I had a new car with a remote starter each time I’d go out in the freezing cold to scrape my iced-over car.  Now that I’m pregnant again I wanted to buy a remote car starter before the weather and my life gets too crazy and I forgot!”

“My wife needed a warm car for the new kid.”

4. Remote car starters are a gift that keeps on giving!

Many of our customers purchase remote car starters as gifts for family members. People love giving remote car starters to the people they care about because it makes their life easier.

“Our daughter does not have a garage for her car and she takes our granddaughter to school on her way to work. She asked for one for Christmas but did not get one, so I thought we would get it for an early birthday present.”

”It was a birthday gift for son.

“I needed a birthday gift for my wife.

” I bought it for my sister so she would stop whining about the weather!”

5. People like to feel like they are keeping up with the Joneses

Our customers don’t mind admitting they were once jealous of their colleagues who could start their cars remotely while staying inside the warm and dry office.

If you don’t like being the last one to get to the best thing since sliced bread, then you might be interested to know that quite a few of our customers bought remote car starters just to keep up with the Joneses.

“I am jealous of my colleagues who can start their cars remotely!”

“Buddy at work has one and I am trying to keep up with the Jones’.?”

“Everyone in my office has been raving about you(Columbus Car Audio). My car took forever to warm up so they all recommended me to you. Everyone who didn’t have a remote start has gotten one from you!”

6.  Various health reasons prompt people to buy remote car starters.

Health conditions can make it difficult getting into an extremely cold or hot vehicle. Various medications can cause heat intolerance, making it difficult for the body to regulate its internal temperature.  And according to Web MD, “heat or high humidity can make many people with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience a temporary worsening of their symptoms.”  Health reasons were only listed by a handful of our customers as to why they buy remote car starters, but we are excited to know that we are helping those customers find new ways to manage their pain.

“Health reasons made getting into an extremely cold vehicle very difficult.”

7.  A remote car starter makes life so much easier!

You’re getting older, the winters are getting colder, and the summers are getting hotter.  It doesn’t matter if you want to save yourself frustration or a few minutes, warm things up, or cool things down; buying a remote car starter can make your life so much easier.

“I was having problems with my key causing me to have problems starting my car. Getting a remote car starter made my mornings so much easier!”

A Letter to Our Customers – Price Increases due to Tariffs

New Tariffs Officially Hitting 12V Industry & products

Last month, the Trump administration announced the latest round of tariffs on Chinese imports that will add up to a 10% import tax on “industrially significant technologies” (meaning more than 100 car parts and accessories). Unfortunately for small businesses like ours, and for our customers, this means price increases on many products.

Going into effect on September 24, these new tariffs will be tacked on to products like Amplifiers, Remote Starts, back up sensors and cameras, and more. New pricing from many of our vendors was effective on October 1, 2018.

What this means for everyone

Luckily, we knew this was coming and were able to place limited orders for certain products and models before our Vendors were forced to raise prices.  With those orders, we will still be able to offer you, our valued customers, the “before tariff” prices on many items while those supplies last. We’re doing everything we can to keep our prices as low as possible for as long as possible, especially with the holidays almost upon us.

We’re still working with our vendors and trying to absorb some of this increase ourselves, so you don’t have to see a large price hike, but we can’t yet guarantee what products will see an increase, what the increase will be, or when it will take effect. Some products will be impacted a little less, and others a little more.

Once we sell through our stock of those items we were able to order at the “before tariff” pricing, our end prices to you will, unfortunately, start to increase. We expect the price increases to reach you starting later this month and certainly by November 1st.

We’re Here For YOU

We’re dedicated to bringing you the best products and services at the best prices, and we will continue to do so for as long as we’re in business. Let this information serve as fair warning, but also an explanation as to why our prices will inevitably be increasing soon. Just like we prepared by ordering what we could from our vendors before prices rose, we suggest that you prepare too.

So, if you’ve been eyeing something in our stores, we recommend you talk to one of our Sales Associates about it sooner rather than later. And of course, we’re here to help in any way we can. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns about these tariffs.

About Columbus Car Audio & Accessories!

The Early Years

Columbus Car Audio & Accessories started in 1978 by two Columbus residents specializing in car stereos and citizen band radios with one location located on East Main Street. Back then, the business name was Wholesale Consumer Electronics of East Main Street but operated as CJ’s Car Stereo. The corporation as we know it today came around 1984 when the original owners merged with Northland Audio on Morse Road, and the name Columbus Car Audio & Accessories was born in 1987. In the early 90’s with citizen band radios declining in sales and popularity, cellular phones and service were brought in making the company one of the first Cellular One Agents in Columbus.

A New Beginning

In 2002, the current owners, husband and wife team Todd and Danielle Hays, acquired a portion of ownership from Danielle’s father, who was an original owner.  Todd and Danielle were not new to the business though, with it always being in Danielle’s family and Todd working at several of the stores starting back in 1986, they were ready to take on the role.

With plans of turning Columbus Car Audio & Accessories into a Central Ohio household name, they developed what CCA is today. Over the next several years, they consolidated several of the stores to streamline operations, created a company Mission and employee Values and Standards, and got the business involved with charities to help give back to the local communities.

Todd and Danielle also knew the CCA needed to change with the times, so they worked on bringing in and perfecting the installation of new and diverse product lines; such as window tinting, leather interior, and paint protection film. They also put in place a marketing/advertising plan that had never before existed, to gain the attention of local consumers. By the mid/late 2000s, CCA’s reputation and sales were on the upswing.

Today and the Future

The company now employs 40+ employees with the average employee tenure being 9 years and operates out of 2 locations; Morse Road and Reynoldsburg. Todd and Danielle credit the success of the company to its customer relationships; focusing on not just selling a product but giving the customer trust that their vehicle is in the hands of the experts. CCA also just celebrated its most successful years in company history to date.

Today, CCA sells select products on its website, has dedicated customer service staff, and is active with local charities including A Kid Again and Buckeye Cruise for Cancer.

They are also planning on expanding to a new, much larger East Columbus location later this year!

“We hope to be an innovative company that continues to supply the area with exciting
products and services for their vehicles for another 40 years. We will continue to change
with the ever-evolving technology in the industry, just as we have for the past 40 years.”

                                                                                                                                                -Todd Hays, Owner

2015 Peterbilt Semi Custom Interior

What do you do when you have a semi-truck that has an over the top exterior that literally stops traffic?  You come to Columbus Car Audio & Accessories to get the interior to match!  That’s exactly what Steve Taylor of Transport for Hire did.

Steve’s original plan was for just a ‘simple install to get a little better sound’ but seeing the truck after arriving at our store, we had grander ideas to make this not your everyday build. Our own Jayson and Tyler started brainstorming ideas to and realized this truck was the perfect canvas for something truly custom. (All they needed to do was convince Steve that he wanted something more than a ‘simple install’!)

Jayson discussed with Steve how his plans would take the custom look from the outside and bring it to the inside of the semi and make it the best sounding truck he’d ever have. After some hesitation, Steve took our advice and really let us have the freedom to play and create with this install. With the budget determined and Steve on board, we started to design his one-of-a-kind custom system.

For the source unit, we used the Pioneer AVH-3300NEX, with Apple CarPlay. With this, Steve could use his iPhone for navigation and incorporate Siri directly into his dash. We also flush mounted a USB port in the console, so he’d always have a place to charge his phone while using CarPlay.

For the front speakers, we chose to go with the JL Audio M650-CCX-SG-TB marine speakers because we knew Steve would be listening to them for hours at a time, not to mention probably at high volume levels and we knew the JL Audio marine speakers would take the abuse.  The factory speaker locations were made for little 4×6” speakers, and we were unable to use them for the new larger speakers. Tyler decided to cut two pair of the M650’s into the bottom side of the overhead console.  The console was wide open so there were no real setbacks to that, it was just a little time consuming.  Tyler remade the underside of the console using two layers of MDF, he wrapped the bottom layer in black vinyl, and the top layer in red.  Both layers were routed out around the edges so that they would have a nice finished look to it that would flow with the factory overhead console.  Tyler also installed RGB lighting from Racesport inc. behind the tweeter of each of the JL Audio speakers, which are controlled with a Bluetooth module. Once Tyler made the panel and had the speakers mounted in the overhead area, we knew that it was going to be in your face loud, so we had to come up with something that would keep up for the rears.

For the rear speakers, we chose to install JL Audio M770-CCX-SG-TB for the B pillars. To do that, Tyler had to open up the factory locations to house the new 770’s. That was easier said than done just because of the depth that the new speakers have, and the spot we chose to install them. Even though the 770’s are loud we knew that they would not keep up with the two pair of 6.5’s in the front.  Especially since they are so low compared to the fronts and blocked by the seats. So, we decided to install a pair of JL Audio M880-CCX-SG-TB in the sleeper area so that if he is parked and sitting in the sleeper area he would still have an amazing sound.  Again, easier said than done; the stock rear speaker was also a 4×6” opening, and there was no depth. Tyler built new panels out of MDF and wrapped them in red vinyl.  As with the rest of the speakers, Tyler installed Racesport RGB lights behind the tweeters and he lit up the overhead storage area in the rear with RGB strips hidden inside the pockets.  The panels were tough to do because of how big the new speakers were going to be in comparison to how small the factory speakers were.  The final panel was on the larger side but flowed nicely with the rest of the truck.

Now that the speakers were installed we needed to move to the subwoofers.  We knew we wanted it loud and that slot ported would be the best way to go.  We thought there was plenty of space but once Tyler started measuring and calculating air space, he soon realized that it would not be as easy as he thought.  We chose to use a pair of JL Audio 12W6V3-D4 12” woofers.  With the airspace he had it was going to be a tight squeeze, plus we had to raise up the box to fit the 12’s, because the floor was higher in the cab than in the sleeping area which is where the box was installed.  We also incorporated the amplifiers into the face of the subwoofer enclosure.  We chose to use a pair of the JL Audio HD900/5V2 amplifiers to run everything.  We used these amps because they have the regulated intelligent power supply. With that technology we were able to get plenty of power to each subwoofer, and all the M Series speakers in the vehicle.  We wired one HD900/5 for the left side and one for the right side.  Originally, we were going to use the new JL Audio VXI amplifiers, but Jayson was afraid that they would not have enough power to really give Steve what he was looking for in the bottom end.  The amplifiers were flushed into the face and wrapped in red vinyl to match the red accent panels Tyler created throughout the semi.  He also installed RGB lights around the amplifiers to really make the interior a cohesive design.

Since Steve spends so much time on the road we also had to give him some entertainment in the sleeper area.  Tyler mounted a 32” Samsung LCD television and installed an Xbox One so that he could play video games, watch a DVD or even Stream Netflix.  The hard part about this was making sure that the television would not come loose or fall while driving, so we installed a fixed television mount on the passenger side wall of the semi. Then Tyler had to get creative to install the Xbox one system.  He fabricated brackets out of MDF, and black carpet, and mounted it to the wall utilizing factory bolt locations.  He made the Xbox one removable in case Steve would ever like to take it out.

Everything turned out great in the end, but there were a lot of challenges that came about through the installation process.  The biggest obstacle was running all the wiring and coming up with bigger speaker locations while still making it seem like a factory install.  It didn’t seem like it would be a big deal in the beginning but then Tyler realized that there was not much room to incorporate larger speakers, extra speakers, and hide the wiring behind panels like he does in cars.  With a lot of creativity, he was able to come up with a truly amazing installation that appears as if it came from Peterbilt and route the wires in a way that you could not tell there was anything done, and the outcome was AMAZING!!! Tyler did an amazing job with this and really took the time to incorporate the red vinyl accent panels and the RGB lighting throughout the interior, giving it subtle accents that really make it one of a kind.

The best part of the build was getting to show our client his baby.  His mouth dropped and an ear to ear grin appeared as he played through a variety of his favorite songs. That was exactly what we were waiting to see, this was his distinct sign of approval!  He loves this truck and was excited to get back on the road and experiment with the new products.  It was such an amazing project and Columbus Car Audio & Accessories was proud to be a part of this build and are excited to start the next project for Steve and his team at Transport for Hire.  He is already in the process of finishing up a new build to drop off to us.

Things You Need to Know About Window Tint

Drying Time

Your new window film will take about 3 to 5 days to fully dry, sometimes a lot longer depending on film brand, type, and weather conditions. Until this time your tinted windows may appear hazy or lumpy and it may seem like you have water bubbles. Do not roll your tinted windows down until fully dry!

Cleaning

Window Film may be cleaned with a soft clean cloth and alcohol based cleaner or plain water. Ammonia products should not be used! To avoid scratching the film, do not use bristle brushes, abrasive scrubbing sponges or any cleaning materials that may have been contaminated with dirt particles, as is commonly the case when washing interior and exterior windows with the same cleaning materials. Some brands of paper towels are coarse enough to put fine scratches in the film, even films with scratch resistant, protective hard coat finish. While these scratches may be too thin to be seen at the beginning, they can damage the polished look of the film over time.

Black Dotted Edges (Dot-Matrix)

Most cars have a black ceramic ‘frit’ edge on the rear window. Sometimes this ceramic edge is straight and flat, sometimes it will have a dotted edge. These black ceramic dots are quite thick on most cars and prevent the window film from sticking to the area between the dots. This results in a whitish looking strip trimming the glass. Typically this isn’t very noticeable, however some cars have a wide band of dots trimming the top of the rear window. This area is so wide that the whitish looking area created is more pronounced. Unfortunately, the effect is unavoidable.

Night time Defogger Distortion

At night you may notice that the light from headlights will reflect off of the defogger lines. This is caused by the film having to bend slightly around the raised defogger line, varies from car to car, and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Seat Belt Chips

Caution should be used when releasing seat belts. Small chips can be made in the window film due to the seat belt hitting the glass as it is released. This is not covered by warranty.

Imperfections

Though we strive for perfection in our installations, due to the nature of the product, some degree of dust contamination and/or minor imperfections are present in every window film application. Also, pre-existing flaws or scratches and metal deposits on the glass are often much more noticeable after the windows are tinted.

If you have any questions about getting your windows tinted, please contact us or stop by one of our stores to see tint shade samples and get more info!

Vehicle Security to Fit Your Needs

Your car probably isn’t just a car to you, it’s much more; it’s an investment and maybe even part of your family. That’s why it’s important to arm your vehicle with a security system to ensure your car stays your car.

While thefts are down dramatically since their all-time high in 1992, thousands of vehicles continue to be stolen each year. From 2007 through 2015, motor vehicle theft dropped from 1.1 million to 686,803 vehicles. However, in the past two years, motor vehicle theft rates have bounced back – increasing 10%. Meanwhile, “smash and grab” car break-ins are still a frequent occurrence across the United States.

While the introduction of “smart key” fobs has widely eliminated motor theft via hot-wiring, thieves are continuing to cost drivers billions of dollars a year in damage and stolen goods. In 2016 alone, $5.9 billion was lost due to motor vehicle theft and intrusion. Thus, it is absolutely essential that drivers do whatever they can do deter, detect, and prevent theft of their vehicles.

Is Factory Alarm Really Enough?

Your vehicle probably came from the factory with some small security system, but all that really means is you have keyless entry and an audible alarm.

  • Keyless Entry – Most vehicles come standard with a remote key fob that allows drivers to conveniently lock and unlock their doors from 30 – 40 feet away. While the vehicle is locked, your vehicle will monitor your doors, so if you someone manages to open the door, the alarm will be triggered.
  • Alarm – If an intrusion is detected (door opened while locked), the vehicle’s alarm will start to sound, alerting people nearby. Most standard security systems simply use the vehicle’s horn.

Is this really enough to deter someone from stealing from you? How often have you heard a nearby car alarm and simply ignored it?

Get an Aftermarket Security System

Adding an aftermarket security system can be the key to feeling safer and ensuring you don’t become a victim of car theft or break in. The following features come standard in most Compustar Security Systems:

  • Impact Detection – Compustar security systems include dual-stage shock sensors that detect two levels of impact, both of which provide unique warning chirps from the alarm siren.
  • Theft Deterrent LED – While your system is armed and the doors are locked, this LED will bling a bright blue light, signaling to car thieves that your vehicle is protected.
  • Starter Kill – While your system is armed, Compustar will safely disable your vehicle’s starter until you disarm your system.
  • Alarm Siren – A Compustar alarm siren is loud, really loud. This ensures anyone messing with your vehicle will have a terrible experience doing so.
  • 2-Way Alert Compatible – Pair your security system with a compatible 2-Way LCD remote or event the SmartPhone application,  DroneMobile, and you’ll be alerted as soon as your alarm is triggered.

Customize Your Security System

Looking for even more protection to fit your specific needs? We offer many customizable add-ons for your security system too!

*Some vehicles may require additional parts and labor. Not all enhancements are compatible with every vehicle or every security system.

A Subwoofer For You!

Subwoofer upgradeA Subwoofer Upgrade is For You!

Auto manufacturers have actually made great strides in improving the overall quality of factory audio systems. Despite this, most music lovers would agree that the majority of stock sound systems could benefit from more and better bass.

While not everyone wants a ‘boom car’ with a trunk full of subwoofers, adding a bit of bass is one of the most significant improvements you can make to your factory system. Adding a subwoofer can actually be quite easy too; thanks to simple upgrades that can work with most vehicles.

Amplified Subwoofers: These all-in-one subwoofer enclosures offer the convenience of built in power Stealthbox Jeep Grand Cherokeematched to the subwoofer specs. In most cases, the built in amp features speaker level inputs that are required for integration with factory systems.

Vehicle Specific Subwoofers: One drawback of a subwoofer is the inevitable loss of cargo space when using a proper enclosure. Enter vehicle specific subwoofers, which are made specifically to fit in discreet corners and spaces of designated vehicles.  Not only do you get a perfect fit suwoofer, it’s also tuned specifically to your vehicle.

JL Audio’s Stealthbox subwoofer line includes more than 100 vehicle specific
enclosures. JL Audio designs Stealthboxes after evaluating potential mounting
locations and analyzing the acoustics of the target vehicle to choose the best
Subwoofer Upgradeenclosure type (sealed or ported).

Pre-Fabricated Enclosed Subwoofers: Already pre-mounted in a box designed to accommodate the subwoofer.  These typically come in different sizes and shapes so you can choose the best fit for your vehicle and space.

Pioneer D Series Speakers

PIONEER’S NEW GENERATION OF TS-D AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENT SPEAKERS: REIMAGINED AND REDESIGNED

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. today introduced the latest iteration of its TS-D line of high performance automotive component speakers packages. The result of ongoing research and development, the TS-D speakers are designed to maintain an exceptionally open and smooth sound quality with solid bass response, bolder vocals, precise staging and clear separation of instruments while greatly improving their installation flexibility and allowing fitment in a broader range of vehicles.

“Pioneer is a company of enthusiasts; we love listening to music, playing music and creating products that reproduce music with all of the passion and emotion that the artist originally intended,” said Ted Cardenas, vice president of marketing for the Car Electronics Division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “Our latest TS-D speakers continue our history of offering outstanding performance and value with an added benefit of more installation options to fit the majority of cars, trucks and SUVs on the road today.”

Twaron® Aramid Fiber Cone and Elastic Polymer Surround
The new cone and surround on the Pioneer TS-D components offer a variety of improvements ideal for optimal performance. The aramid fiber cone is constructed from Twaron woven cloth that is hardened and shaped to produce a rigid, yet low mass cone with excellent dampening characteristics. Adding an elastic polymer surround and bullet shaped phase plug, the TS-D woofers demonstrate quicker response with superior midrange extension and a very natural sound.

Small Size, Big Sound
The new 0.9 inch tweeters on the TS-D components maintain an exceptionally open and smooth sound quality with silky reproduction of higher frequencies. The design of the TS-D tweeters include a soft dome diaphragm and surround constructed out of lightweight polyester woven fibers, for increased sensitivity and improved response. In addition, the tweeter is designed with a larger rear chamber and rounded over flange, for extended frequency range and wider dispersion. To fit in the various tweeter locations found in vehicle doors and dashboards, the tweeters have a compact 1-1/2 inch outside mounting diameter and a mounting depth of only 7/8ths of an inch.

Installation Friendly Crossover
The crossover network on the TS-D components has been redesigned to reduce the chassis size significantly while maintaining the use of high quality capacitors, inductors and resistors. The compact size improves installation flexibility, allowing the crossover to fit easily and inconspicuously inside a door, under the dash or behind a panel. A selectable tweeter level switch (-3dB, 0dB, +3dB) allows the output of the tweeter and woofer to be closely matched.

Installation Flexibility
The component package offers multiple tweeter mounts and woofer/tweeter installation adapters to fit in many of the most popular and top selling vehicles on the road today. The TS-D1730C includes a pair of 6″ x 9″ and 6-3/4″ woofer/tweeter installation plates designed to mount the woofer and tweeter into factory door locations. The plates are pre-scored with vehicle specific cutouts to match the speaker locations in many Toyota®, Scion®, and Honda® vehicles. The TS-D1330C includes a pair of 6″ x 8″ woofer/tweeter installation plates designed to mount the woofer and tweeter into many Ford® and Mazda® applications. Both packages include tweeter spacers to accommodate flush or angle mounting.

Upgrading Your Car Stereo

Car Stereo Upgrade LifestyleThe Basics; Upgrading Your Car Stereo

Car stereos direct from the factory just aren’t very good.  Think about it; car manufacturers make cars, not stereos.  Factory systems are typically designed poorly and made with cheap materials. Yes, technically, you can still listen to your music, but it probably doesn’t sound too great.

There are tons of aftermarket products that are made specifically for improving a car stereo. (Hey, we’ve made a business out of it!) Not every vehicle needs to replace all of its factory components, but there are common pieces that more than likely need upgraded.

What to Upgrade

Apple CarPLay Car Stereo UpgradeReplace Your Head Unit: It’s what allows you to play music, make phone calls, navigate and more. You can start by replacing the heart of your car’s sound system. Factory head units are very basic and aren’t powerful enough to give you crisp quality sound. Aftermarket head units are equipped with advanced features like built in navigation, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM and more!

Kenwood Scion Car Stereo UpgradeUpgrade Your Speakers: It’s your door speakers and tweeters that dictate how clear and full your car’s sound is. Factory speakers typically can’t deliver good sound quality due to poor manufacturing. Aftermarket speakers are built with the highest quality materials for better sound performance. Take some time to listen to different car audio brands’ speakers and then choose the size that fits your vehicle.

Get a Subwoofer: These speakers are meant to cover the lower end frequencies in your music.  Subwoofers are available in different sizes depending on how you want your music Untitled-1to sound. If you want a full-bodied sound from your music, then adding a subwoofer is key.

Add an Amplifier: Without sufficient power, subwoofers and speakers are pretty worthless. Adding an external amp to your system can give you the power you need to get the most of out your speakers and subs and get a sound that your factory head unit won’t be able to produce.

Next Steps

Sure, you may have heard of all the things listed above that could improve your sound, but maybe you don’t know how to shop for them? That’s where we can definitely help. Not only do we sell the best bands in car audio, but we know what we’re talking about and how to install them.  Visit us with your vehicle and we can discuss what you want your music to sound like and come up with a plan so you can get the most out of your car stereo.

Amplifier Frequently Asked Questions

Amplifier FAQ

How do I shop for an Amplifier?

Make sure to match the power output of the amplifier to the power handling of your speakers. If your front and rear speakers have slightly different power handling ratings, use the lower rating and find an amplifier that comes close to that.

Max Power, Peak Power or RMS Rating?

We suggest looking at the RMS power rating on amplifiers and speakers.  Some manufacturers use terms like Peak Power or Max Power but neither of these reflect the true performance as well as the RMS rating.

Can I amplify my factory speakers?

img_hcp1dAdding an amplifier to factory speakers isn’t always a good idea.  The vehicle manufacturer selected these speakers, meaning they weren’t high on the priority list, and they may have some characteristic that makes them incompatible with aftermarket amplifiers.  If you’re wanting better sound and thinking of an amplifier, it’s good to upgrade to powerful and compatible speakers as well.

Don’t factory stereos come with built in amplifiers – Why would I need one?

Yes, most factory stereos come with some built in amplifier action, but they’re not powerful enough to produce adequate sound at louder volumes without distortion. Bass especially suffers, since it takes even more power to produce lower frequencies than higher ones. To get better overall sound, adding an amplifier is key

Do I need an amplifier if I’ve upgraded my speakers?

visual1Even if you’ve upgraded your car’s sound system with the very latest head unit and speakers, it won’t make much difference to your overall sound if you’re not providing it with enough power.

How many channels do I need?

It really depends on what you want to power or how many speakers you need to power. Amplifiers are categorized by the number of ‘channels’, or speakers, they can power. A one-channel, or mono amplifier, can power a single speaker. (Standardly used to power a subwoofer). Two-channel amplifiers can power two speakers, and you can guess how many speakers a four-channel amplifier can power. (It’s four!) There are also five-250x4channel amplifiers that can power your entire system (2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers, and a sub).

If I add an amplifier and new speakers, do I have to get a new head unit too?

Not if you don’t want to. If you’d prefer to keep the factory look to your vehicle, you can certainly just upgrade your speakers and add an amplifier to improve your sound. In fact, many amplifiers can actually integrate with factory radios.

Next Steps…

Rockford Fosgate Custom Audio for Your Polaris RZR

It’s no wonder the Polaris RZR is one of the most popular ATVs around. These rugged vehicles are built for pure off-road fun, whether you’re going down a trail or up a dune. Music makes everything more fun, so it’s great to see that Rockford Fosgate has designed custom audio gear for select RZR 900, RZR XP 1000, and RZR XP models.

With four packages to choose from, you can select the system that’s right for the way you use your ATV. Upgrade the radio you already have with the Rockford Fosgate PMX-2 receiver found in Stage 1 (and in the other three stages, too), or go all-out with the awesome array of speakers, subs, and amps in the Stage 4 package. We’ll get to the packages in a bit, but first, let me tell you about the gear Rockford Fosgate has put together.

A rugged receiver that rocks

The Rockford Fosgate Punch PMX-2 (found in all four packages) packs a lot of features into a compact, water-resistant digital media receiver. This trail-ready stereo has built-in Bluetooth® connectivity, so you can stream music from your phone and crank up your favorites.

If you prefer to plug in, there’s an aux input, plus a USB input that will charge your phone while you’re playing music. And speaking of charges, the PMX-2 also has a low-voltage warning alert built-in, so you won’t accidentally drain your battery.

In addition to AM and FM radio, you can also tune into the weather band to stay up to date on current conditions — a handy feature to have when you’re in the middle of nowhere.

Bigger, better sound on the trail

Rockford’s RM1652B Prime 6-1/2″ speakers (which you get starting with the Stage 2 package) are tough enough for off-road and marine use, but they also sound great. The poly cone is treated to withstand moisture and sunlight, as is the 1″ volcano dome tweeter in the grille. These full-range speakers give you the performance you expect in a package you won’t have to worry about when the going gets rough.

They’re really easy to install, too, thanks to the direct-fit speaker enclosures included in your RZR kit. Made from a fiber-reinforced composite blend, they bolt right in using the factory mounting holes. No drilling needed!

For top-shelf sound, there’s the Stage 4 package, which adds a pair of enclosed RM1652W-MB Prime roll bar speakers. These 6-1/2″ speakers are marine-rated and really rock. The adjustable clamp rotates for perfect positioning.

Let there be bass

A 10″ subwoofer? On an ATV? Absolutely! The Rockford Fosgate RM110D2B sub (found in Stages 3 and 4) fits into select RZRs with help from a direct-fit mounting kit that uses the factory glove box  space to create a seamless, custom-looking installation.

The sub is marine-rated and ready for anything, while the bolt-on enclosure is made from a durable composite that blends right into the interior.

Rockford Fosgate amplifiers supply the power

A system like this requires serious power, and the Stage 3 and Stage 4 packages include two compact amps that will give you all you need. The 4-channel Punch PBR300X4 will take care of your speakers, whether you go straight to Stage 4 or add tower speakers later. The Punch PBR300X1 mono amp will power your subwoofer. Your kit includes mounting plates for these marine-rated, trail-ready amps.
